Handrail Design

Post by Chris Achilles »

I would be interested on any views on the following handrail design rules.

1. BS6399:Part 1 states that the load should be considered to act at 1.1m above the floor regardless of the height of the handrail. This means that for a 3 tier system 1450mm above the floor the moment would be Force x (1.1m + connection offset), say F x 1.2m and for a 900 high system it would be exactly the same.

2. BS6399:Part 1 states the load to be considered but does not clarify the direction? I'm of the opinion that it should be applied in all directions (as too are some USA regs) but I know for a fact that some people and manufactures only consider it to be outward only! It can not be nothing inward or laterally so what should be considered in other direction, 25%, 50%? I can not find an answer anywhere! The SCI's responce was - "In the absence of any other guidance it should be considered in all directions" which make sense. Is anyone aware of any clauses which clarfiy UK rules on loading direction?

Thanks

Chris
